1. Scope

1.1

This Standard specifies requirements for certification of companies engaged in fusion welding of aluminum performed as part of the fabrication or erection of aluminum structures.

1.2

Requirements necessary to obtain and maintain certification include the qualification of welding procedures, the qualification of personnel, and an assessment of welding and auxiliary e quipment and facilities.

1.3

All welding of aluminum by a certified company shall be in accordance with all the requirements of this Standard unless specified to the contrary and agreed to between the purchaser and the company. Note: Such agreement must not contravene the requirements of any legislation referencing or adopting this Standard, unless approval to do so is obtained from the regulatory authority.

1.4

CSA Standard W47.2-1967 was withdrawn on December 31, 1986. Companies certified prior to that date will have until December 31, 1988, to meet all the requirements of W47.2-M1987 to maintain their certification. Companies using this interim certificat ion provision shall not be eligible for a further period of tentative certification based on Clause 3.14.

1.5

This Standard applies only to the gas metal arc welding (GMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and plasma arc welding (PAW) processes.

1.6

This Standard is intended to apply to general commercial fabrication or repair. It is not intended to apply to specialized fabrication of such objects as aircraft or pressure vessels, which are covered by other codes.

1.7

This Standard is not intended to apply to fabrication involving metal thickness less than 3 mm.
